Scalp itching and pain after chemotherapy

Symptoms of itching and pain (trichodynia) are sometimes encountered during and after chemotherapy. Researchers inquired about scalp symptoms in 34 breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and 17 patients undergoing treatment with tamoxifen. 87 % of patients undergoing chemotherapy reported scalp pain and itching. 13 % reported scalp pain only.
Symptoms were not as common in women receiving tamoxifen – 12 % had itching, 7 % had scalp pain and 12 % had both itching and pain.

Overall, this study showed that scalp symptoms were common in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
