ENDOCRINOLOGIST OR DERMATOLOGIST FOR HAIR LOSS?

Should I book an appointment endocrinologist or dermatologist?

I'm commonly asked if patients should see an endocrinologist or dermatologist? This is challenging as many dermatologists do not treat hair loss and many endocrinologists do not treat hair loss.

A few general principles are helpful

1. FOR MALE PATIENTS

a) Under 18 with hair loss, a dermatologist OR paediatrician is a good starting point

b) Over 18 with presumably genetic hair loss, a dermatologist OR hair transplant specialist is a good starting point

c) Over 18 with hair loss other than genetic hair loss, a dermatologist is a good starting point

2. FOR FEMALE PATIENTS

a) Under 40 with hair loss (and regular menstrual periods), a dermatologist is a good starting point

b) Under 40 with hair loss (and irregular menstrual periods), an endocrinologist (or gynecologist) is a good starting point followed by a dermatologist once endocrinological causes (PCOS, adrenal hyperplasia, other hormonal abnormalities) have been ruled out

c) Over 40, a dermatologist or hair transplant specialist is a good starting point

Hope this helps,
