QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Current Hair Loss Studies

We are currently studying:

1. The role of topical anti-androgens in the treatment of male pattern balding

Rationale: Potential side effects of oral anti-androgens, albeit uncommon, have prompted many patients and physicians to either abandon these treatments or to consider various alternatives. Topical anti-androgens may provide an alternative.

2. Optimizing PRP Therapies for Women with Female Androgenetic Alopecia (Female pattern hair loss)

Rationale: Platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatments involves the use of a patients own growth factors. The optimal concentration of PRP to inject for scalp hair loss, the optimal volumes and optimal methods of activation remain to be determined. We have set up a study to carefully evaluate these parameters.

3. The role of PRP in the treatment of Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

Rationale: Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring alopecia that occurs in women between 50-75. To date, the cause is unknown. Although treatments such as the  5 alpha reductase inhibitors and hydroxychloquine are at the top of the list for potentially effective treatments, it appears that growth stimulators including minoxidil may have some benefit. In this study, we have set out to evaluate the role of PRP and optimal PRP settings for women with FFA.

4. The efficiency of diphencyprone (DPCP) in the treatment of alopecia areata

Rationale: DPCP is a helpful treatment for many patients with advanced alopecia areata. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the benefits of over 350 patients with DPCP.

5. The inheritance of temporal triangular alopecia

TTA is an interesting hair loss condition that develops between 2-5. By studying identical twins with FFA, we have come to understand a bit more about the pathogenesis of this condition.
