Exclamation mark hairs are short hairs. They are often seen in patients with active stage (acute) alopecia areata but may also be seen in trichotillomania. Exclamation mark hairs represent broken hairs. The are thick at the top and become thin as they enter the scalp. Most exclamation mark hairs eventually fall out.
