Methotrexate Use in Males May Cause Erectile Dysfunction and Lower Testosterone

Methotrexate May have Negative Effects on Sexual Health in Some Males

Previous studies have raised the possibility that male users of methotrexate may be at increased risk for sexual dysfunction.

A new study of 30 male patients with psoriasis receiving low dose methotrexate (ie 15 mg per week) examined whether methotrexate use affected erectile function, sexual hormone levels and sperm counts.

Results show that after 6 months of treatment, there was a significant decline in erectile function (p < 0.001) and a reduction in total testosterone levels (p = 0.03). No significant reduction in sperm count was noted after six months of MTX treatment.

Comment

This study is important as it reminds us that methotrexate use in our male patients may affect sexual health. Counselling about potential sexual dysfunction is important so that patients can make full informed consent about starting (or not starting) the medication.
