Upright Regrowing Hairs in a Background of Anisotrichosis: Clues to AGA + TE

Many Closely Packed Upright Regrowing Hairs (URH) provide Clues to a Diagnosis of Telogen Effluvium

A nice example of three upright regrowing hairs (see arrows) popping back up through the scalp in a background of “anisotrichosis” (hairs of various thickness or caliber). This is consistent with diagnoses of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and telogen effluvium (TE).

Arrows point to upright regrowing hairs (URH), a sign of new regrowth. While the human scalp always contains several hundred newly regrowing hairs at any time, many closely packed regrowing hairs is abnormal and a sign that some significant shedding has taken place in recent times. Exploration of potential causes of telogen effluvium is important. These include stress, low iron, thyroid problems, medications, diets, weight loss, infections, and systemic illness.
