BIOGRAPHY                                   


The Past.

Dr. Donovan is a US and Canadian board-certified dermatologist specializing in the treatment of hair loss. He has focused exclusively on hair loss from beginning of his dermatology career. He is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 2004.  His post-graduate clinical training in Dermatology and PhD studies in molecular biology were conducted at the University of Toronto.   

In addition to his Canadian and American board certifications, post-specialization training included: i) post-doctoral fellowship training in New York at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine ii) training in the Hair Loss Program at the University of California San Francisco under mentorship of world-renowned hair dermatologist Dr. Vera Price and iii) training in hair transplantation under mentorship of preeminent dermatologist Dr. Walter Unger.

Dr. Donovan first joined the faculty as Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto to lead the program in Hair Transplantation and Hair Loss before ultimately establishing his private practices in Toronto and Vancouver. In 2017, he closed his Toronto offices. His main practice is now located in Whistler, BC (main office).   He continues to teach and lecture nationally and internationally on hair loss and has delivered approximately 100 national and international lectures on hair loss.  In 2013, Dr. Donovan co-founded Okavana Laboratories, a company committed to developing better products for hair care and to developing new treatments for individuals affected by hair loss.  He is currently the President of the Canadian Hair Loss Foundation, a non-profit organization which supports education and research in hair loss. In 2018, Dr. Donovan joined the Dermatology Department at the University of British Columbia. 

In addition to delivering over 100 national and international lectures on various topics in hair loss, Dr. Donovan has authored over 40 articles which are published in a variety of research journals and is the recipient of several national and international awards for his research and leadership. In 2016, Dr. Donovan was honoured with the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance "Dermatologist of the Year" Award. In 2023, Dr Donovan was honoured with the Canadian Dermatology Association Resident and Fellows Association Clinical Teaching award, an award recognizing teachers who have made outstanding contributions to the teaching of dermatology residents and fellows in Canada.

Dr. Donovan continues to be active in teaching and research. His teaching focuses on educating both medical professionals as well as the general public. Dr. Donovan teaches medical students, dermatology residents and fellows and directs the Evidence Based Fellowship training program - an international training program for physicians interested in advancing their skills in hair loss. He serves as a volunteer with several hair loss organizations, including the Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation (CaNAAF) and the Canadian Hair Loss Foundation and the Vancouver Chapter of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. His work with these groups helps ensure accurate information about hair loss gets conveyed to the public. In addition, Dr. Donovan frequently answers questions for the public about hair loss through a variety of online forums. In addition to questions patients ask on blogs posted here on this website, Dr. Donovan has provided over 4400 answers to questions about hair loss on the popular website RealSelf.com. In addition, Dr. Donovan's Instagram posts now number over 2500 and have gained widespread recognition as a valuable educational and interactive medium for teaching the public about hair loss. He is also active on Drugs.com providing educational information for patients with hair loss related questions.  Individuals around the world have the opportunity to learn about hair loss through these platforms.

Dr. Donovan is active in hair loss research. His current research interests include hair loss in women, scarring alopecia, ethnic hair disorders, alopecia areata and hair transplantation. Dr. Donovan is on the editorial board of several medical and scientific journals.
