Scalp Biopsy
Removal of Sample
Scalp biopsies are short procedures that are necessary for complex or unusual presentations of hair loss. They are performed in the office and under local anesthesia. A punch instrument is used to make a circular incision in the skin. Thereafter the core of hair and skin is removed and given to the pathologist for evaluation under the microscope.
In this picture, a core of skin containing hair is gently grasped with forceps before being removed.
