Spironolactone is used off label in treating female pattern hair loss (female androgenic alopecia). The medication does not help everyone but does help a proportion of women stop their hair loss and helps some women improve their density.

Anyone patient starting spironolactone or any physician prescribing spironolactone needs to be aware of all the side effects. The following table is a helpful guide, but of course does not catalogue every possible side effect.

The main side effects to be aware of are dizziness, breast tenderness, hair shedding, increase urination, fatigue, decreased libido and irregular periods.
