HOW TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THE SCALP FOR PROPER DOCUMENTATION AND MONITORING

NOTES ON TAKING PHOTOS

1. Dr. Donovan generally requests 10 photos that clearly show the front, middle, top, temples (left and right), sides (left and right), sideburns (left and right) and back of the scalp.

2. Dr. Donovan may ask you to repeat these same photographs every periodically throughout the year. These photos should ideally be taken with the same lighting, and ideally same room. The goal is to compare them with previous photos.

3. Photographs that just show the ‘hair’ are generally not helpful – the hair and scalp must be shown in each photo. One must always make efforts to part the hair so that the skin is showing in each photo.

4. Good quality photos are important but equally important is that the photos the next time are done exactly the same with the same distance and same parting of the hair.

5. Many patients find it helpful to have another person assist in taking the photos but this is not entirely necessary.

6. Please do not send blurry photos if possible as they are not usually helpful in assessing your hair loss.

7. We do not require magnified trichoscopy images for most of our patients. However, if this is something you wish to send to Dr. Donovan (or this is something you are Dr. Donovan have discussed in the past), please take the images from 8 standard areas according to our standard guide.

HOW TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THE NAILS FOR PROPER DOCUMENTATION AND MONITORING

Hair and nails are closely related. We don’t always need photos of the nails for everyone - but it is always appreciated. If Dr. Donovan specifically asks for photos of the nails, all that is required is a simple photo as shown below. Photos can be sent separately as two photos - left one and right one. If possible, please remove any nail cosmetics before sending.
