Environmental Triggering Factors in Scarring Alopecia

What environmental factors might play a role in scarring alopecia?

The cause of primary scarring alopecia is not clear and is thought to be different for different scarring alopecias.

It is currently thought that there may be “predisposing factors” that increase a person’s risk to develop scarring alopecia. These include genes and underlying hormonal and metabolic states.

There may also be “triggering factors” that further play a role in the development of scarring alopecia in someone with the right predisposition.

A variety of triggering factors are under study at the present time including some found in the list here. The exact role of these factors is not clear at the present time but will become more and more clear over time.
