QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Minoxidil is better than PRP for Women with Androgenetic Alopecia

PRP less effective - but better liked - compared to Minoxidil

A new study compared the effectiveness of platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) therapy to topical minoxidil therapy in 20 women with androgenetic alopecia. The study involved use of each treatment in a 12 week cross over design. Hair density was measured using TrichoScan analysis.

Results showed that minoxidil improved hair more than PRP. This included effects on hair density and thickness. Follow up surveys showed female patients reported improved quality of life with PRP but not with minoxidil.

Summary

Overall, these data show a particular satisfaction with use of PRP that is not achieved with minoxidil. Minoxidil however was superior to PRP.
